Along with ideas below, there are many great educational books at your local newsagent or bookshop, which can support further learning. The use of ICT – iPads, computers… offer a range of educational websites and apps – both free and at cost. Free writing and drawing costs nothing. Typing up a word document, perhaps publish and illustrate a story your child has written. These are beneficial for hand eye coordination and thinking skills. Maths in everyday life – through shopping, money, reading signs along the way, measuring / cooking, adding/subtracting number plates, fractions of a cake or pizza… Of course, at this stage in their lives, free imaginative play is a wonderful way to express self.
HOME READING Program –
Children are expected to read each night. Follow up questions or conversation is beneficial for building comprehension and understanding of what is being read. Discuss punctuation, to build on reader fluency and expression. When the text is too long to complete in one evening, please include page or chapter, so your child will continue to receive rewards for incentive & motivation.
SPELLING –
Refer to the ‘spelling’ page for a comprehensive list of our weekly words.
We will also be adding extension words for those children that are ready.
We have also included common words on that page… as your child reads through the list, you may wish to note any words that need further practice. Activities include: LSCWC (look, see, cover, write, check), writing them in a sentence, pointing out those words in nightly reader…
SHOW & TELL
This refers to Speaking and Listening, as part of our Literacy program, which encourages students to build confidence when speaking publicly (in front their classroom peers) and also to engage with peers’ presentations, by thinking about and asking good questions, relating to topics discussed.
You can support your child with this program by checking the blog regularly to find out about upcoming topics for presentation. Allow your child to think about and prepare what they will present and discuss with the class. Perhaps they may even practise at home, particularly if building confidence is a focus for your child.
MATHS –
Mathletics passwords have been sent home.
Weekly tasks linked to our lessons will begin Term 2.
** Important technical update for your attention (from mathletics.com.au)**
We wish to advise our users of a change in the minimum requirements of 3P Learning’s online suite of learning products – some or all of which your school(s) currently subscribe to. Due to updates and improvements being made to the platforms, all users will be required to ensure their system has the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed – with a minimum of version 11.6. **
‘ALL ABOUT ME’ Book
Each child will have a turn at taking this class book home to complete a double page about themselves. There is also a bag, which can be used to bring along any additional items to show. The children will present their work to the class.
** The book is to be returned within 7 days, so all students can participate.
